Glossary of Key Terms

Below is a list of terms most commonly used amongst the Scaletron employees and customers.  After 40 years of manufacturing we’ll never say we’ve heard it all, but the list is getting shorter!

  • Corrosion Resistance: The ability of a material to withstand deterioration caused by chemical reactions with its environment. This is a key feature of Scaletron’s products due to their use with corrosive chemicals.
  • Net Capacity: The maximum weight a scale can accurately measure, excluding the weight of the scale itself or its container.
  • Cylinder Scales: Scales specifically designed to weigh liquid gas cylinders (e.g., 150 lb. cylinders, Ton cylinders), often used for monitoring chemical consumption.
  • Drum, Tank & Platform Scales: Versatile scales designed for weighing larger containers such as drums, tanks, or materials on platforms, available in various sizes and capacities.
  • IBC Tote Scales: Scales engineered to weigh Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs), which are reusable industrial containers for transporting and storing bulk liquids and powders.
  • Spill Containment Scales: Scales that integrate a basin or secondary containment system to capture potential leaks or spills from the chemical containers being weighed, preventing environmental contamination.
  • Volumetric Screw Feeders: Devices that use a rotating screw to precisely measure and dispense (dose) dry powdered or granular materials at a controlled rate by volume.
  • Gravimetric Feeding: A method of dispensing materials by weight, often achieved by integrating a volumetric feeder with a scale to ensure highly accurate dosing.
  • Indicating and Control Capabilities: Features of scales that allow users to view weight measurements (indicating) and often to manage processes based on those measurements (control), including features like remote monitoring.
  • Containment Basins: Secondary vessels or areas designed to catch and hold spills from primary containers, enhancing safety and environmental protection.
  • Trunnions: Support structures or pivot points, often mentioned with Ton Cylinder Scales for safe handling and storage of large cylinders.
